This site presents the Neuroinformatics Portal Pilot. This project is part of a larger effort to promote the exchange of neuroscience data, data-analysis tools, and modeling software. For this pilot project, we do not aim at providing substantial resources. We rather develop the basic infrastructure needed for an optimal utilization of the many available resources at a later point in time.

The Human Brain Project (HBP) was launched in 1993 to develop and support a new science: neuroinformatics. Since then, HBP-funded investigators have made many seminal contributions to biomedical informatics. And, the HBP and its investigators have played a significant role in shaping the current landscape of informatics initiatives at the NIH.

The Biomedical Informatics Research Network (BIRN) is a National Institutes of Health initiative that fosters distributed collaborations in biomedical science by utilizing information technology innovations.
Currently the BIRN involves a consortium of 21 universities and 30 research groups that participate in one or more of three test bed projects centered around brain imaging of human neurological disorders and associated animal models.
The BIRN mission is to accelerate Discovery Science by creating and fostering a new biomedical collaborative culture and infrastructure.

Reactome is a curated database of biological processes in humans. It covers biological pathways ranging from the basic processes of metabolism to high-level processes such as hormonal signalling. While Reactome is targeted at human pathways, it also includes many individual biochemical reactions from non-human systems such as rat, mouse, fugu fish and zebra fish. This makes the database relevant to the large number of researchers who work on model organisms. All the information in Reactome is backed up by its provenance: either a literature citation or an electronic inference based on sequence similarity. Our ontology ensures that the various events are linked in an appropriate spatial and temporal context.

A grand challenge in the post-genomic era is a complete computer representation of the cell, the organism, and the biosphere, which will enable computational prediction of higher-level complexity of cellular processes and organism behaviors from genomic and chemical information. Towards this end we have been developing a bioinformatics resource named KEGG, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes, as part of the research projects in the Kanehisa Laboratory of Kyoto University Bioinformatics Center.

E-Cell Project is an international research project aiming to model and reconstruct biological phenomena in silico, and developing necessary theoretical supports, technologies and software platforms to allow precise whole cell simulation.

BrainMaps.org is an interactive high-resolution digital brain atlas and virtual microscope that is based on scanned images of serial sections of both primate and non-primate brains and that is integrated with a high-speed database for querying and retrieving data about brain structure and function over the internet.
